Endura MT500 Jacket - Men's

Endura MT500 Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 23, 2010

I love this jacket, it sheds water like a greased duck and it vents well. The stretch cuffs are a little weird, but easily removable. It fits amazing on the bike, the front is short enough to not bunch and the tail keeps my whole butt covered. The hoods fits around a helmet and is super adjustable. I'm 6ft and 200lbs and the large is big enough to wear a thin layer underneath. This jacket is possibly the best rain jacket I've ever worn.

SRAM X.0 Trigger Shifter Set

April 11, 2010

Only the hammerschmidt shifter will work with the Hammerschmidt. Your local bike shop can order individual shifters so you can save a little money buying only the one you need.

Gravity DH Stem

April 11, 2010

As far as I know, nobody makes a 1" specific stem for oversize bars. But there are adapters that will work with a 1 1/8" stem and a 1" fork. If I remember right the last Ritchey stem I bought came with one.

Shimano SLX Hydraulic Disc Brake - Pre-Bled & Assembled

Shimano SLX Hydraulic Disc Brake - Pre-Bled & Assembled

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2010

These have become my favorite brakes. They slow my 200 lbs down quick, they don't have heat issues, they're pretty light and stupid easy to work on. IMHO these are the easiest brakes to bleed. I can adjust these in a third the time it takes to get an avid elixer to stop rubbing.

Five Ten BA51C Shoe - Men's

Five Ten BA51C Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 11, 2010

I dig these shoes a lot, but I don't like the puffy looking skate style shoes. Does the tongue really need to be that thick? They stick to pedals like super glue, and don't look goofy hitting the bars afterward. I wouldn't wear them mountain biking, but they rule street and dirt jump sessions.

Geax Lobo Loco Mountain Bike Tire

April 11, 2010

I try not to ride on muddy trails, but that aside, I've rode the TNT version of these for a season and loved them, unless I was coming out of a creek crossing. Not much will hold well on wet roots or slick rock, but these really aren't good at it.

Shimano PD-M545 SPD Dual Platform Pedal

Shimano PD-M545 SPD Dual Platform Pedal

Rating for this product: 2 March 24, 2010

I've had 2 pairs and on each I knocked the outer body into a rock and it bent the cage and spindle, making it very hard to unclip and impossible to clip back in. I went to Time Z pedals and won't buy these again. There are better options if you want a large platform and clipless ability.

Time ATAC XS Mountain Bike Pedal

Time ATAC XS Mountain Bike Pedal

Rating for this product: 5 March 24, 2010

The greatest pedal ever. Light, strong, serviceable and adjustable. I do not condone riding muddy trails, but if you're going to, these will clear mud like you wouldn't believe. Fantastic for cross, commuting or mountain biking. Time pedals have replaced all of my shimano spd and crank bros pedals. I have ATACs on my XC and FS trail bike, and the cheaper Alums on my commuter. I broke a Time Alum by smashing it really hard into a rock a couple of times over a couple of years, and Time sent me a brand new pedal. I love them.

Shimano SLX FC-M660/M665 Hollowtech Crankset

March 23, 2010

Don't run a 9 speed chain on your 8 speed cassette, that will cause more problems, a 8 speed chain will work fine on the crankset and there isn't really a need for a 9 speed front derailer if your old one gets setup right. I run this crankset as a double with an ancient stx-rc 8 speed derailer and it works beautifully.

Shimano XT SL-M770 Rapidfire Shift Lever

March 23, 2010

This shifter will work, but the problem is more likely with your derailer or cable instead. make sure you have the right tension on the cable or your derailer stops are adjusted to the right spot first. Your local bike shop would able to look at it and give you a better idea of what is wrong.

Race Face Isis Signature Bottom Bracket

March 23, 2010

the bottom bracket works for both 68 and 73mm shells, and comes with a 5mm spacer (the silver ring in the above pic) to adapt it back and forth. If the bottom bracket is looking longer on the drive side, then remove the spacer, but if it is looking longer on the non-drive side the spacer needs to be in-between the frame and bottom bracket. Hope that helps.

Endura Zyme 3/4 Bike Short - Men's

Endura Zyme 3/4 Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 3, 2010

Let me be clear in saying I don't wear these if I'm going to seriously hit the trails. They're perfect for the ride to work/school/bar, great for a quick trail hit afterwards, jim-dandy a for session at the jumps/pump track, and I love 'em for daily wearing. They fit me great, a little baggier than the humvee or singletrack. They're made of nylon but it's been brushed really heavy so it feels like light canvas. I don't carry a lot in my pockets, so the lack of belt loops doesn't bother me, and the adjustable tabs hold them up just fine.
I normally wear 35-36 inch pants and the large fits great.

Crank Brothers 5050 X Pedal

Crank Brothers 5050 X Pedal

Rating for this product: 1 February 26, 2010

The replaceable plates sound like a good idea, until they decide to replace themselves in the middle of a trail. The bearings are horrible and horrible to try and overhaul if you don't strip the spindle in the first place. Over a decade in shops and these are in top of the worst pedals I've ever seen. Go buy some Atomlabs or DMRs instead.

Crank Brothers 5050 X Pedal

February 26, 2010

I've seen three or four people strip the threading on the spindle trying to break them down. I wouldn't recommend it. There are better pedals with sealed bearings for the price.

Shimano Shimano LX Hydraulic Brake Lever and Caliper kit

February 26, 2010

The frame and fork have to have the mounts for the brakes, but you are probably going to have to replace the wheels and buy a new gear cluster for the wheel as well as a chain. It's possible but could get expensive really quick. I'd take the bike to your local bike shop and tell the mechanics what you want to do and ask for their advice, they can walk you through pricing and problems easier with the bike in hand. Good Luck!!

a conundrum

Sombrio Misfit Jacket - Men's

Sombrio Misfit Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 26, 2010

I like this jacket, but don't really. The fit isn't bad, but will emphasize the gut. The pockets are roomy, but you can't comfortably put your hands in them. The butt coverage is great, but the front is too long. It's warm, but not super breathable. The tag is gigantic and will stick out of the collar at any chance. It's fantastically weather proof. I've worn it for snowshoeing and skiing too. The knit sleeve cuff is weirdly large. With all the whining about the jacket, as soon as it's snowing, it's on my back, and it makes winter bike commuting much more comfortable.
And no, it doesn't have underarm zips or a removable hood.

Not too shabby

Cutter Asymm Softshell Anorak - Men's

Cutter Asymm Softshell Anorak - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 26, 2010

It looks pretty good, though has been referred to as my Micheal Jackson Jacket. Not as wind resistant as my Marmot soft shell, but fits a ton better on the bike. I got it on chainlove so the price was amazing. The hood is great and fits well. Wore it with a wool jersey underneath at 15F and was plenty warm. The lack of pit zips is disappointing, and the sleeve extensions were sewn a little off so the sleeve twists with my thumbs in the thumb holes.
