Shimano America XTR RD-M972 Shadow Rear Derailleur

The Shadow Rear Derailleur exhibits the same precision shifting as all of Shimano's XTR components, but also includes carbon fiber construction for reduced weight. Shimano used direct routing to reduce the chances that you'll snag a cable during your ride. great invention

I got sick of destroying new derailleurs because I scaped the cage on rocks. I got the shadow and now I hit a lot less object with it. The shadow saves me money! Get the XT, if your really worried about the weight start with your fridge. Now I'm just waiting for sram to come up with their version.

i've been reading the xtr dual control shifters are not a good idea with m972 shadow (sgs) rear derailleurs. is this true? will i have 2 wait another 10 days b4 i ride?Impulsive - atl

If you are using dual control the shifting direction will be opposite if you use a shadow. Also the spring is stronger so shifting with your lever will be more difficult. The dual control levers were built for a light action rear derailleur. Hope this helps.

If you are running 27 speed with a triple ring crankset in front you want to use the long cage. Using a short cage you can run out of spring when shifting to big ring and it is tough to setup to get clean shifts when in the big ring.

I agree.....just buy one. Best rear derailleur Shimano has put out (the XT shadow is really good too). Durable and mighty sexy looking on your rig.

does he use 3 chainrings or 2? I would go long for 3 and short for 2. Yeah, depends on the gearing. The long cage is a safe bet since it works for all gear ranges....and its more carbon to make the ride look sweet. KC

Stop looking at your buddies bike and his shiny new shadow. Just step up to the plate and buy one. They shift reliably on every ride, require very little maint, and stay out of the way. I ride a short cage with 3 rings on a Felt Virtue 2 (5" full).
