Shimano America XT BR-M775 Hydraulic Disc-Brake Caliper for Post Mount

If you need to use more than one finger to stop your bike, you're clearly not using the Shimano XT Hydraulic Disc-Brake Calipers. These strong, dependable, and precise Shimano disc brakes allow easy modulation and solid stops with nearly zero effort. Won't it be nice to finish a long downhill run without pumped forearms?

Bottom Line: Stop struggling with your brakes and switch to the Shimano XT Hydraulic Disc-Brake Calipers.

Avid and Shimano use different fittings. You could possible make a custom line with goodridge braided lines, but it would cost quite a bit. The master cylinder may still be a different size, which would cause problems with braking performance. On top of it all Shimano uses mineral oil, whereas avid juicy brakes use DOT brake fluid.

I would stick to an all shimano or all Avid system. In the end it would probably be cheaper and would certainly be more reliable.

The Shimano calipers and Avid levers are not compatible.

I've never tried this, so I can't answer your question directly. However, for disc brakes, levers and calipers are generally designed as a single system. To mix and match you will have to ensure that the line between the caliper and the lever is the same, that the fluid for the Shimano brakes and the avid lever is compatible and that volume pushed by the pull of the lever is compatible with the volume needed to move the pistons in the caliper. Then there is still the issue of bleeding. It might all work out - both Shimano and Avid use non-DOT oil based systems. Honestly though, I'd buy a matching lever/caliper - my brakes aren't something that I want to have any questions about.

Oh yeah!

I put these things on my downhill race bike and they definitely get the job done. I'm running 8-inch rotors to stop a 40lb bike at race speeds and haven't had a problem. I was running Hayes 9 before, and the XT blows them out of the water.
