Maxxis Ardent Downhill Tire

The newest tire in the Maxxis MTB line is the Ardent, and it offers riders unbeatable traction with a self-adjusting tread. In its raw form the Ardent would be an aggressive rear tire, with delta-shaped center tread sections for grabbing dirt under acceleration and braking. However, the channel cuts in the center and side knobs change the simple block tread design into a grippy, toothy tire that hooks up on anything from hardpack to slickrock, while still presenting that unified delta shape that claws deep into loose and wet conditions. This is the 2.6 diameter, double-ply wire-bead version made for DH and freeride, and it comes in either triple-compound or 60a sticky rubber.

  • Tire Durometers: Higher the number the harder the compound, softer durometers grip better, but wear out faster
  • 70a: Hardest compound for maximum tire life, lowest rolling resistance
  • 60a: Better traction, higher rolling resistance
  • 3C: (Triple Compound) hard center compound for low rolling resistance and long life, progressively softer compounds on the edges for higher grip when cornering
  • UST – Universal Standard for Tubeless – use in conjunction with UST rims

Bottom Line: Maxxis knows traction.

This refers to the tackiness of the tire. the 60a is a super tacky tread gives more grip60a refers to the hardness of the rubber or durometer. 3c refers to their triple compound construction which uses different durometer rubber in different parts of the tread to create better wear and traction characteristics.
