a bike rack would be a great accessory for the things i like

a bike rack would be a great accessory for the things i like to do and where i like to ride, but i have a full suspension mountain bike (soft tail). i was told that i could tighten up the rear suspension enough to add a rack, but i'm not sure if that's true... any suggestions?
